Scripture Reading Deuteronomy 6:1-4, 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Deuteronomy 6:1-4These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. 3 Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you.

2 Timothy 3:16-1716 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Thoughts to share Hey, why do we have to be bothered by commandments, Laws, Rules?

At the Plain of Moab, Moses got the new generation of Israelites ready to enter the Promised Land. He retold the story of how God saved them from Egypt and made covenant at Mt. Sinai. He talked about their own stupidities, failures and shames in the journey. He honestly pointed out the challenges which they would face in the Promised Land. He instructed them that what they were to hold on first and most, what the factors of their success and fails were to be. He repeated these points again and again. He inspired and encouraged them. He warned and rebuked them. In summary, he helped them to see two sides of their covenant with God. On one hand, there was a promise. On the other hand, the promise had conditions and requirements.

Confusing? To enter and possess the Promised Land is one thing. To live on in peace and safety and to have long life in the Promised Land are another thing. The hinge is whether they would keep their identity before God in all challenging cultures in the Promised Land. God did not tell them whether it would be easy or difficult for them.

A year is ahead us. Praise the Lord for another year’s opportunity to live abundantly. The basic factors for our happiness and success is same as those Israelites who were about to entering the Promised Land: honor the Lord, heed the wisdom in his words, be a doer of his words in our everyday and ordinary life contexts.

Prayer suggestions:

What guides our new year? What are our basic identity and our mission? Whom do we want to honor and please ultimately?

Dear God, thank you for the new year and for the new life opportunity. There are many things to be done. Help us not to be buried by all kinds of to-dos. Lift up our heads to see you, to meditate your words, and to be counseled by your words. Come, be our counselor, be our advisor in the journey which we are moving. May our year will be a year of walking with you closer, glorifying you and honoring you more. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
