Entering the Presence of the Lord
(All) Praise the Lord.
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens.
(Men) Praise him for his acts of power;
praise him for his surpassing greatness.
(Women) Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,
praise him with the harp and lyre,
(Men) praise him with timbrel and dancing,
praise him with the strings and pipe,
(Women) praise him with the clash of cymbals,
praise him with resounding cymbals.
(All) Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord. (Psalm 150, NIV)
Scripture Reading: John 5:19-24; 10:30
5:19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.
10:30 I and the Father are one.
Thoughts to share and to ponder: The Triune God
The Gospel of John has its unique features. First, it tells that Christians’ God is invisible in the sense that He was not made by human hands. But God Himself has His own way to reveal Himself. He decided His equal, the Son of God, Jesus who was God came to the world as a man to show the image of God. Second, it repeatedly tells the relationship of God the Father, Jesus the Son of God, and the Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ ministry on the earth, he explained this relationship in many ways, though those explanations were not understood and accepted well immediately.
The early church fathers did their careful and humble study on all Scriptures. They in genius way invented and adopted the word ‘trinity’ to describe the God in Christianity. The word ‘trinity’ is combined of tri and unity. It means three and one. It becomes three in one. The triune God is not invented by humans but is clearly revealed in the Scriptures from the Old Testament and the New Testament.
In the Gospel of John, Jesus publicly told how he related to the Father God. He also publicly announced his essence truly reflecting God the Father. At his last days before going on the cross, he taught his disciple about the coming of the Holy Spirit. Those disciples witnessed and experienced the coming of the Holy Spirit into their hearts and spirits. We’ll see some examples here.
On Jesus related to God the Father
- “For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. “(5: 19)
- “For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son him authority in execute judgement, because he is the Son of Man. (5:27)
- “...because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.” (5:30)
- “For on him (the Son of Man) God the Father has set his seal.” (6:27)
- ”my teaching is not mine, but his who sent me.” (7:16)
- “If you knew me, you will know my Father also.” (8:19)
- “I am from above...I am not of the world…I came from God…but he sent me...” (8:23, 43)
- “...the Father is in me, and I am in the Father. “(10: 38)
- “If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” (14:7)
On Jesus reflected the essence of God
- “Truly truly I say to you…I am the bread of life…. I am the living bread that came down from the heaven. …whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” (6:35, 58)
- “I am the door of sheep…I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. ” (10:7,10, 11)
- “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live. (11:26)
- “I am the way, the truth, the life. No one comes to the Father except through me…. Whoever has seen me has seen the Father…. I am in the Father and the Father is in me…” (14:8, 9, 10)
- “I am the vine…” (15:5a)
On Jesus related to the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit related to him and God the Father
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. (14:16-17)
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. (14:26)
But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.” (16:13-15)
Then in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus gave final commission to the disciples. He asked them to baptize all who believed in Jesus in the name of triune God- the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 28:19)
Furthermore, when we read the New Testament, we find that the first apostles who received the commission from Jesus freely called the Triune God in their greetings, teachings, praises and prayers, and blessings. For examples-
Paul to Ephesian Christians starts with praises after his greetings:
1: 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. (Ephesians 1:3)
Paul blessed the troublesome Corinthian church with following:
May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. (2 Corinthians 13:14)
Peter greeted Christians who scattered everywhere in Roman Empire with reminding their precious identity-
To God’s elect, exiles scattered throughout the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia, 2 who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to be obedient to Jesus Christ and sprinkled with his blood: (1 Peter 1:1)
So, in very simple ways, we can summarize the Triune God here-
The Father, The Son, and the Holy spirit are always coexisted, equally divine, and in equal status. This design existed from the time before creation of the world. Then each has a unique responsibility:
God the Father- He initiated, planned, and supervised the progress of salvation plan
The Son Jesus Christ: The Son came to show us the image of God the Father. He announced the good news of the Kingdom of God and died on the cross as a ransom to complete the salvation work. And he further planned the world mission after he was resurrected and before he went to heaven. He continues to pray and supervise the spread of the salvation gift at the right hand of the Father.
The Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit pours the love of God in believers’ hearts, testifies Jesus Christ, and advances the spreading of the done salvation gift. He solidifies the done-salvation in every believer’s life and in every community of the saints.
The Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit have different works. But they are one. And they work together all the time.
Understanding the Triune God helps believers to fully comprehend the greatness of God and to be confident in the assurance of their new life in Christ and to be effective in doing the world mission.
Prayer Suggestions:
Triune God, we praised that you three so faithfully love us and work in us in so many special ways. Surely we are in awe of the way of your design. Father, we praise you for your eternal salvation plan and your determination to make it completed in your timing. Jesus, we thank you for coming to show us the image of the Father, becoming the ransom of our sins and bringing us back to Father. The Holy Spirt, thank you for being with us all the time, pouring the love of God to our hearts, teaching us, guiding us and comforting us. We know that with the Triune God, we are in a much safe and peaceful road in our life journey. We pray in your wonderful name, Amen.
Benediction
May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
